Boston Stump, as it is known locally, or Saint Botolph's Parish Church to be correct, is the largest parish church in the country. It stands on the bank of the river witham in the centre of Boston. Looking spectacular from the outside being described by Pevsner as a 'giant among English Parish churches' Boston Stump has always been a landmark. It can be seen for miles standing tall on the flat fenlands surrounding Boston. If you drive up from Boston towards the market town of Spilsby and then east towards Horncastle, the Stump can still be seen. In fact the Top of the Stump is alleged to be at the same height above sea level as the Front door step of Winceby House.
The Stump replaced an earlier Norman church. Construction of the present building commenced in 1309 and was completed by 1390 apart from the tower. The tower construction was started in 1425 - 1430 but not completed until 1510-1520.
We installed a new sound system in October 2013 but due to the devastating floods that took place in December 2013 the system was damaged along with the Electrical installation, Heating system, Cafe, Shop and major damage to the internal stonework and woodwork. We returned to install the new system in November 2014.
